Entry requirements for IT Degree in Australia for International Students

Academic Requirements 

For Certificate/Diploma/Bachelor Degree:  

  • Completion of Australian Year 12 or equivalent (Strong performance in Mathematics and English subject). 


For Graduate Diploma/Master Degree:

  • Bachelor’s degree in IT, CS, or related field with competitive GPA. 
  • Some universities may require CV, letters of recommendation, work experience certificates. 


English Language Requirements 

The English proficiency requirements depend upon the university and course types.  

  • IELTS requirements: Overall, 6.5 in IELTS no band less than 6.0  
  • TOEFL (iBT) requirements: minimum overall score of 79 
  • PTE (A): minimum score of 58 with no band less than 50 


Additional Requirements

Professional Year (PY) Program

The Professional Year Program is a job-ready program developed by the Australian Computer Society (ACS). It is designed for international students who recently graduated from Australian institutions and is looking to start their careers in the Australian tech industry.  

The Professional Year Program is a 44-week course that includes 32 weeks of classroom-based work-readiness training and 12 weeks of local internship. After completing this course, international students will gain 5 points towards their skilled visa application for permanent residency.

Pathway to Permanent Residency (PR) for IT Graduates

Australian tech markets still have the shortage of skilled IT professionals. As a result, there is always a high demand for skilled professionals in the ICT sector. 

ICT Occupations are listed on both Medium and Long-Term Skilled Occupation List (MLTSSL) and the Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL). Occupations featured in this list offer direct PR pathways through several skilled migration visas. 

After graduation, international students are granted temporary graduate visa 485 which allows them to live, study and work in Australia for up to 2-3 years depending upon qualification. As we talked before, students may be eligible to join Professional Year (PY) Program which provides an opportunity to join the Australian Tech Industry and gives additional 5 PR points upon graduation.  

Before applying for PR visa, you must get skill assessment test from Australian Computer Society (ACS). After getting positive results and meeting the qualification and other requirements you are eligible to apply for PR visas such as:
