What is Australia Training Visa (subclass 407)

Australia Training Visa (also called as 407 visa) is temporary stay visa that allows applicants to take part in workplace-based occupational training activities or professional development program in Australia. This visa is designed to improve skills related to the applicant’s current occupation, field of study, or area of expertise.

Types of Occupational Training Under the Subclass 407 Visa

There are three types of occupational training covered by 407 visa: 

Occupational training required for registration 

  • You can apply for this stream if you wish to participate in a workplace-based training program to obtain registration, membership, or licensing required for your job.  
  • The registration, membership, or licensing is necessary to work in that occupation in Australia or your home country. 


Occupational training to improve skills in an eligible occupation 

It involves workplace-based structured training programs that: 

  • Are customized to meet the specific training needs of the nominee. 
  • Align with occupations listed on the eligible skilled occupations list. 
  • Require the nominee to have recent, relevant experience or study experience which may include: 
  • At least 12 months of full-time equivalent experience in the occupation. 
  • Experience gained within the 24 months before the nomination is lodged. 


Occupational training for capacity building overseas 

Occupational training for capacity building overseas includes: 

  • Practical Training for Overseas Qualification 
  • Applicants seeking to complete a period of practical training, research, or observation in Australia as part of their overseas qualification. 
  • Government-Supported Training 
  • Training supported by a government agency, either in Australia or the nominee’s home country, to facilitate the training process in Australia. 
  • Professional Development for Overseas Employees 
  • Overseas employers sending their employees to Australia for professional development programs aimed at enhancing managerial or professional skills. 

Requirements for the 407 Training Visa

The requirements for training 407 visa are as follows:

  • You must be sponsored by an approved temporary activities sponsor.   
  • Your sponsor must nominate you for training unless they are an Australian Commonwealth Government agency. 
  • You must be at least 18 years old. 
  • If you are applying onshore (from Australia), you must hold a valid substantive visa (excluding subclass 403, 771, or Special Purpose visa). Please note that you must apply within 28 days of your previous visa expiring or after a visa cancellation decision. 
  • You must meet Health and Character requirements. 
  • You must have adequate health insurance to cover your medical treatment and any necessary transport while living in Australia. 
  • You must provide evidence that you can financially support yourself and any accompanying family members. 
  • You must prove your genuine intention to stay in Australia on a temporary basis 
  • You must be proficient in functional English.

The application process for training visa are as follows:
