Understand everything there is to know about calculating PR points in Australia.

Australia uses a points-tested immigration system to assess eligibility for several skilled migration visas. For most points-tested skilled visas, applicants generally need a minimum of 65 points to be eligible to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI), although higher scores often improve the likelihood of receiving an invitation. This points test applies to visas such as the Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189), Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190), and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491). Let's explore how Australian PR points are calculated and the factors that contribute to your overall score.

Age is one of the key factors considered under Australia's skilled migration points test. Generally, the Australian Government prioritises skilled migrants who can contribute to the workforce and economy over the long term. Applicants aged 25 to 33 years receive the highest number of PR points because this age group is considered to have strong workforce participation potential and the ability to make a long-term contribution to Australian society. For a complete breakdown, check the points table below:
Factor | Different criteria | PR points |
Age | at least 18 but less than 25 years | 25 |
at least 25 but less than 33 years | 30
at least 33 but less than 40 years | 25
at least 40 but less than 45 years | 15 |
English language ability is an important factor in Australia's skilled migration points test. The Australian Government awards additional PR points to applicants who demonstrate stronger English proficiency through approved tests such as IELTS, PTE Academic, or equivalent English language assessments. Generally, the higher your English test score, the more points you may receive, which can improve your overall skilled migration points score and increase your competitiveness in the invitation process. It is important to consider the following notes:
Education qualifications are an important factor in Australia's skilled migration points test. Applicants with higher-level qualifications, such as a doctorate, master's degree, bachelor's degree, or eligible trade qualifications, may receive more PR points depending on the qualification type and assessment criteria. For certain occupations on Australia's Skilled Occupation List, applicants may need a skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority, such as VETASSESS, to confirm that their qualifications and experience meet Australian requirements.
