What is a Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189)?

The skilled independent visa (subclass 189) is a point-based system that allows skilled workers to live and work permanently in Australia without the need for sponsorship from an employer, a state or territory government, or a family member. 

Benefits of this visa: 

  • You can stay in Australia permanently. 
  • Study and work in Australia in any region of Australia. 
  • Get access to Australia universal health care scheme (Medicare) and other social security benefits. 
  • You may become eligible for Australian citizenship (if you meet requirements). 
  • You may be able to sponsor your family members or relatives for PR (if they meet the conditions). 
  • You are allowed to leave and re-enter Australia as much as you want for five years after the visa is issued. 

Eligibility Criteria for 189 Visa

  • If you are currently residing in Australia while applying for this visa, you must hold a substantive visa or a Bridging Visa A, B, or C. 
  • If you currently hold a 491 or 494 visa, you must have held it for at least three years before applying for visa 189. 
  • Your occupation must be listed on Australia’s Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). 
  • You must obtain a positive skills assessment for the nominated occupation from the relevant assessing authority. 
  • This is a points-based visa, so you must score at least 65 points. 
  • Must meet English language requirements. 
  • Must meet Health and Character requirements. 
  • If you owe money to the Australian Government, you must repay it or arranged to pay it back. 
  • You must not have had a visa cancelled or your previous visa application denied. 

Application Process for Visa 189

Step 1: Confirm that your occupation is on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). 

Step 2: Get your skills assessed by an appropriate assessment authority. You must obtain a positive skill assessment for subclass 189. 

Step 3: Lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect (the Australian Government's online system for skilled migration program). 

Step 4: If your EOI is approved, the Department of Home Affairs will send you an invitation to apply for 189 visas, as well as a 60-day deadline to submit your application. 

Step 5: Gather all the required documents and apply for the visa.

189 Visa Processing Time

The processing time for 189 visas varies depending upon the various factors, including application volume, individual circumstances, or new updates in immigration policies: 

However: 

  • 25% of applications are processed within 4 months.  
  • 50% of applications are processed within 4 months.  
  • 75% of applications are processed within 5 months, and 
  • 90% of applications are processed within 8 months.

Can I include my family members on my 189-visa application?

Yes, you can add your family members on your 189-visa application if they meet eligibility criteria. Please note that you can only include your partner or spouse, and dependent children in your visa application. The primary applicant parent isn’t considered a member of the family unit by the Australian Department. As a result, you can’t include your parents in your 189-visa application except for your dependent children or spouse.
