Skill assessment for secondary teaching in Australia

Secondary school teacher skill assessment is a formal check conducted by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) to assess any applicant, foreign-trained or anyone who studied in Australia, against the suitability criteria for registering as a teacher in Australia.

Note: AITSL skill assessment is only for migration purposes. For teaching in an Australian school, one must apply for separate state teacher registration.

Common mistakes during secondary school teacher skill assessment

  • Submitting an IELTS score that doesn’t meet the requirements: If you submit an IELTS score that doesn’t meet the 7/8 standard, AITSL will assess you via the language test pathway, and you will fail the assessment.

  • Not reading the official guidelines: You need to read the official guidelines and checklist, as you might miss key requirements for teaching skill assessment.

  • Submitting low-quality or incomplete documents: Black-and-white scans, low-resolution or blurry pictures, or missing pages can cause delays or even rejection in teaching skill assessment.

  • Submitting teaching practice evidence from an employer and not your university: AITSL only accepts official statements from the awarding university, not schools or employers for skill assessment.
